The study of Cancer Genomes has revealed abnormalities in genes that drive the development and growth of many types of cancer. This knowledge has improved our understanding of the biology of cancer and led to new methods of diagnosing and treating the disease. Some of these test, screenings and therapies are FDA approved test. For example; the discovery of cancer-causing genetic and epigenetic changes in tumors has enabled the development of therapies that target these changes as well as diagnostic test that identify patients who may benefit from these therapies. Researchers have also shown that a given type of cancer, such as breast, lung and stomach prostate may have several molecular subtypes and mutations. For some types of cancer the existence of certain subtypes had not been known until researchers began to profile the genomes of tumor cells.
Doctors may use a variety of laboratory test if cancer is suspected. In conducting Lab test for cancer, samples of blood, urine, other bodily fluids or tissue are examined for abnormal cells or tumor markers that may determine whether a person has the disease or a precancerous conditions. Lab test also maybe used to screen high-risk patients, pinpoint the stage of cancer identify treatment options and evaluate whether the cancer is responding to treatment. Lab's test may also be used to determine whether a patient has a cancer recurrence a disease that has returned to its original location or whether a new cancer has developed.
